Dehradun: Backing the implementation of
Uniform Civil Code in Uttarakhand, Union minister of state for social justice and empowerment
Ramdas Athawale said it would ensure equal rights for Hindus and Muslims, end preferential treatment, and promote communal harmony. He made the remarks on Sunday in Dehradun while attending a review meeting with social welfare department officials.
Athawale, said, "UCC is the need of the hour and it would safeguard the rights of Hindus and Muslims equally. It would also bridge the divide between both communities as there would be no preferential treatment for anyone." Athawale said work was underway to establish old-age homes in every district of the state for elderly persons who had nobody to care for them.
Responding to a question on the Aurangzeb grave row in Maharashtra, Athawale said, "In our party's view, the grave should not be removed; however, we condemn Aurangzeb and the Muslims of the country do not support him either. Both communities should live in harmony. We suggest that a splendid memorial honouring Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj should be built there and with time, nobody will care about that grave."
Athawale said chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami is "a resolute and decisive leader" and added that he would urge the CM to raise the incentive amount for inter-caste marriages where one partner belongs to SC or ST from Rs 50,000 to Rs 1 lakh. "Our ministry provides a monetary incentive of Rs 2.75 lakh to such couples. During the review meeting with social welfare department officials, I observed that while the number of such couples is increasing, the figures remain modest," he said.
Praising PM Narendra Modi, he said, "Under his leadership, the NDA govt has been taking every decision for the upliftment of the underprivileged in the country and our aim is to make India a developed nation by 2047. The country has given 60 years to Congress to rule, so we are certain to get the opportunity to serve the country for at least the next 50 years."
